ABOUT OUR PRACTICE
Retention
Removing braces signals the start of 24 months of retention supervision. Please remember that this part of your orthodontic treatment is just as important as the active movement phase in determining the ultimate success of your treatment. Once the teeth have been moved into their desired positions, a period of time is needed to stabilize them so that the surrounding bone and soft tissue can conform to your new dental alignment. When braces are removed, it is a good time to review several important aspects of care.
How Long Are Retainers Worn?
The supervised retention phase lasts for 24 months. This 24 month phase, along with your initial retainers are included in your original contract. Following the 24 month period, you will be dismissed from treatment. Should you ever have any questions, or the occasion arises that your retainers need to be adjusted or replaced, we will always be available. The usual office visit or lab fees will be charged accordingly. You are urged to continue to wear your retainers generally on a nightly basis after the 24 month supervised retention period in order to maintain your "beautiful" smile.
Will My Teeth Move Back After Treatment?
If retainer wear is discontinued, there may be minor changes in tooth position. Teeth have a tendency to want to return to their original position, especially if excessive forces are applied to the teeth by clenching or grinding. The position and fit of teeth generally change throughout your life with or without orthodontic treatment. Our goal is to limit these changes to the natural process of accommodation while maintaining both a good functional and aesthetic result.
The longer the retainers are worn, the better chance you have of long-term stability. This is something that YOU can do for yourself.
Taking Care of Your Retainers
Keeping the retainer in the mouth or its case will avoid loss or breakage which would lead to extra expense. If the retainers are lost, broken, or do not fit properly, you are urged to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Any additional services will be rendered at our usual fee.
Brushing the retainer with cool water and toothpaste and soaking it in a cleanser or mouthwash periodically will keep it fresh. Never place your retainer in hot water, as it may become distorted and require replacement. If a brush is not available after eating, rinse off your retainer and place it back in your mouth or in its case. Do not put your retainer in a pocket where it might become broken. Also, avoid leaving it out where pets could find it or where it may become lost.
What If My Retainer is Lost or Broken?
Immediately phone the office for an appointment to replace or repair the retainer. There will be a fee for a lost or broken appliance. Although there will be a charge, it is a relatively inexpensive way to protect the investment you have made in your orthodontic care.
